Wonder Woman has been an absolute phenomenon. Not only has Patty Jenkins’ directorial offering smashed box office targets, grossing over £282 million and overtaking Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool, but it has been a complete breakthrough for female-led action films thanks to its roaring success.
However, that’s not to say that the film has been without criticism – just last week, director James Cameron told The Guardian that the film was a ‘step backwards’ for women. While Jenkins’ provided an insightful and thoughtful response to his comments, it’s not the first – or last – time that Wonder Woman is being dragged into a feminist debate.
Gal Gadot has spoken about how she is constantly challenged on her views around sexism, even going on to say that she was body shamed for not being ‘busty’ enough to be cast in the starring role.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the 32-year-old actress said: ‘I told them, “Listen, if you want to be for real, then the Amazons, they had only one boob. Exactly one boob. So what are you talking about here? Me having small boobs and a small ass? That will make all the difference.”‘
Ultimately, however, Gal reveals that she is most irked by constant questions about her beliefs when it comes to gender equality.
She said: ‘People always ask me, “Are you a feminist?” And I find the question surprising, because I think, “Yes, of course. Every woman, every man, everyone should be a feminist.” Because whoever is not a feminist is a sexist.’
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
