These are some of the most common and famous quotes that got their meaning from REAL historical happenings:
· People used urine to tan animals, so everyone would pee in a pot and sell it to the tannery for survival- this made them “Piss Poor!”
· Worse were the lowest of the low who couldn’t even afford a pot- they “didn’t have a pot to piss in.”
· Most people married in June as they bathed in May but if the brides smelled, they would carry a bouquet of flowers to hide their body odor!
· Baths were taken by man of the house first, then all the sons, then women, and lastly in the dirty water: the children in a big tub filled with hot water. Hence the quote: “Don’t throw the baby out with Bath water!”
· Homes with tiny roofs-thick piled high and no woods beneath for animals like cats and dogs to get warm. But when it became slippery in rain and they would slip and fall of the roof. Hence “It’s raining cats and dogs!”
· The floor was dirty and only rich had something else except soil. Hence “Dirt poor.”
· Food was cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle hung over the fire which was lit daily by adding vegetables as a stew for dinner. Leftovers in the pot got cold and had to be warmed over next few days. Hence the famous rhyme: “Peas porridge hot, peas’ porridge cold, and pea’s porridge in the pot nine days old.”
· Rich had plates made of pewter and acidic foods caused the lead to leek into the food and make it poisonous. So, for more than next 400 years, tomatoes were considered toxic.
· Bread was divided status wise: workers got burnt bottom, a family got the middle portion, and guests got the top- upper crust!
