Why You Should Avoid Sitting in Crossed-leg Position

The crossed leg is a very common pose people adopt when sitting down; many of us do it automatically. This position is elegant and sexy and often associated with being ladylike and feminine. We have got used to sitting crossed leg even without actually thinking what we are doing. Many of us don’t know about it but sitting in this position can cause serious health problems.

It is considered as the most stylish posture, sitting crossed-leg has been claimed harmful by many health experts. Not many of us know that this sitting posture could cause major damage to legs. From increasing blood pressure to causing varicose veins, this ‘lady-like’ position can be responsible for many health issues.

So we have decided to give you some important information about sitting in this position and its consequences. We probably have no idea what can happen to our body when we spend too much time with one knee crossed over the other!

Various studies have been done and it proves that when you sit for a long time with your legs crossed the blood pressure in your body increases. Even though you are not having any issues with the blood pressure of your body still living a healthy and better life won’t harm in any way.

Maintaining a particular posture for hours can lead to a condition called peroneal nerve paralysis or palsy. This can also happen if you sit in the same position for prolonged periods of time. It turns out that the position that is most likely to cause the peroneal nerve palsy is the cross-legged position.

The reason being a larger quantity of blood that gets pumped from your heart. When you sit crossed leg, blood is sent from the knee to the chest eventually increasing your blood pressure. Another reason can be that the blood pressure rises because the isometric exercise of the leg muscles (exercise when your joints don’t move and muscles don’t change in length) increases the resistance to the blood flow. This is the reason why crossing your legs on the knee and crossing your legs at the ankle doesn’t have the same effect.

Sting in this position can also increase your chances of developing ‘spider veins’. Although the most important reason to varicose veins is your genes but sitting in this position can lead to inflammation of the compressed veins.

There are tiny valves in the blood vessels that prevent blood from flowing in the wrong direction. When your legs are crossed, the pressure on your veins increases and impedes your blood flow, causing the vessels to narrow and weaken and allowing the backflow of blood. This can cause pooling of blood in the legs and make your veins swell.

When you sit crossed leg you also increase your chances of having a pelvic imbalance. As crossing your knee makes the outer thigh muscle longer and the inner thigh muscle shorter, and puts your joints at risk of moving out of place.

A recent study has also shown that when a person sits crossed leg for more than 3 hours a day it results in a person developing, lower back and neck pains, a stooped posture and discomfort in their hips.
